After seven years, can Western reclaim “Mountain Jug”?

The jug has been retained at ASU since 2005

The 77th annual Battle for the Old Mountain Jug between Western Carolina and Appalachian State will be this Saturday in Cullowhee.

Western (1-7, 0-6), under new coach Mark Speir, has been much more competitive in games this year, but has lost the last 20 games in the Southern Conference. It’s been seven years since the Cats defeated the Mountaineers (5-3, 3-2).

Speir was an assistant coach at Appalachian State from 2003-2011.

A WCU win Saturday would be huge and would mean a lot for the season. A sellout crowd is expected at E.J. Whitmire Stadium this Saturday—kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m.

The WCU vs. ASU series dates back to 1932. WCU trails in the series 18-57-1.
