A 27-year-old Franklin driver was charged after accidentally injuring a 9-year old boy who was waiting on the school bus Monday morning.

According to NC State Trooper Tony Hawkins, the accident occurred just after 7 a.m. at the intersection of Highlands Road and Riverbottom Road. The driver, Thomas Colmenares failed to see the young boy standing on the shoulder of the road waiting for the bus and ran over his foot driving a 1995 Ford pick-up.

The victim was taken to Angel Medical Center with non life-threatening injuries.

Colmenares was charged with reckless driving and driving without a license. Trooper Hawkins says the driver had not cleaned the ice off of his windshield and could not see the boy.

The accident could have been much worse, Hawkins said.
