The Macon County Arson Investigation team spent part of Wednesday trying to determine what sparked an early morning fire Wednesday in the Burningtown Community.

Fire crews from Burningtown-Iolta Fire Department were paged to the blaze off of Burningtown Road at 2 a.m.

Assistant Fire Chief Kenneth McCaskill says firefighters knocked down the flames but the fire had ripped through the roof leaving one end of the home severely damaged.

“There may be a few things in the house they can salvage, but other than that, it’s a total loss,” McCaskill said.

According to McCaskill the home was vacant at the time of the incident.

Burningtown was assisted by Cowee and Franklin Fire Departments. Crews were on scene from 2 to 6 a.m.
