Clarks-Chapel Fire-Rescue puts out the car fire following the wreck Jan. 27

A 33-year old Franklin man escaped a fiery crash with just minor injuries in the early hours of Sunday morning.

The driver is however facing criminal charges. According to North Carolina State Trooper Clay Cogdill, the single-car accident occurred around 3:30 a.m. on North Skeenah Road.

Trooper Codgill says William Dale Sheffield was driving a 2001 Ford Focus when he veered off the right side of the road in a curve and collided with a tree causing the car to catch fire.

The car was totally burned, according to Codgill.

Sheffield was charged with driving while impaired and reckless driving. He was treated at Angel Medical Center for minor injuries.
