Town to Continue Movie Night Starting in May

At their recent monthly meeting, the Franklin Town Council voted unanimously to continue offering the outdoor movies series at town hall beginning in May.

Last year, the town council entered into a partnership with Ruby Cinemas to offer free outdoor movies. The success of the first two movie nights last September and October have prompted the town to agree to continue holding the monthly movie series the first Friday of every month from May through October.

The movies will be shown in the lower level parking lot by town hall which lends itself as a natural amphitheater. Last year, the town also removed trees from the hill by town hall for better viewing of the movies which are shown in the back corner of the town hall parking lot with viewers sitting on the hill adjacent to the parking lot.

The outdoor movie partnership will cost the town $500.00 per show and will be offered free to the public. Ruby Cinemas will be in charge of set up, break down and staffing for the movie event. In addition, the local theater will offer concessions such as popcorn, candy and drinks for sale.

The town approved the funding of the May and June movies from the contingency fund in the current town budget. In the upcoming budget for fiscal year 2018-2019, the town will appropriate funds for the monthly movie as a regular line item under events and festivals.

The event is a family friendly event with the showing of age appropriate movies. The town will be responsible from picking the movies that will be featured and selections will be family friendly movies with a G, PG or PG-13 rating.

The town decided to add outdoor movies to its downtown entertainment for the public. Already hosting the weekly multi-generational event, Pickin’ on the Square, the town wanted to offer something that would appeal to younger crowds and families.
